East Cancer Institute: a personalized support and care program to improve the care of patients with gynecological cancers

Attached to the Paul d’Egine Hospital (Ramsay Santé), the East Cancer Institute (ICPE) is a multidisciplinary structure, bringing together on a single site all medical and paramedical specialties allowing complete and adapted care for women affected of gynecological cancers (endometrial, cervical, ovarian, vulvar, vaginal and fallopian tube cancer).

With more than 17,000 women diagnosed each year in according to the National Cancer Institute, the establishment has the most advanced techniques (diagnostic and therapeutic) and offers, thanks to the excellent know-how of its seven surgeons and its care teams, a global and multidisciplinary approach (medicine, surgery, oncology, genetics, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, radiology, chemotherapy, biology, supportive care) to effectively treat these cancers.

A personalized support and care program

Gynecological cancers are common in women, and some are diagnosed late. However, early detection increases the chances of recovery in nine out of ten cases.

In this respect, the ICPE offers support in line with the latest recommendations recommended by the High Authority for Health, and has a modern technical platform of excellent quality to deliver care safely: surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy (outsourced to a partner center), and innovative therapies such as immunotherapy. “These patients are generally referred by their local doctor. Here, we take care of them from the therapeutic decision to the surgical intervention, and throughout their oncological follow-up.” says Dr. Anne Thomin.

Patient files are studied and discussed during meetings of multidisciplinary consultation (RCP) which take place on a weekly basis. These meetings bring together doctors from different specialties as well as a coordinating nurse, and aim to set up a fully personalized care program for each of the patients, and coordinate medical, paramedical and support care teams throughout the course.

These care of supports[MC1] which are an integral part of patient care, aim to ensure the best possible quality of lifeboth on a physical, psychological and social level (pain management, nutritional support, help with resuming physical activity, psychological support, etc.).

Prevention and information workshops to raise awareness among the general public

While some of these gynecological cancers are still discovered and treated late, more and more prevention and awareness actions are emerging, particularly on the occasion of dedicated world days. Vaccination campaigns are also organized, such as cervical cancer screening (Human papillomavirus (HPV)) in colleges for young people aged 11 and over.

Very committed to the well-being of its patients suffering from gynecological cancers, and to helping them better understand and deal with their care pathway (treatment, surgery, follow-up), the establishment is mobilized all year round, and organizes in particular on the occasion of September TurquoiseGynecologic Cancer Awareness Month:

of the prevention workshops for patients, but also for healthcare professionals and more broadly the general public to learn how to detect the first symptoms; of the exchange groups open to all with the participation of the IMAGYN patient association, to free speech, share experiences, meet practitioners, or even learn more about treatment options.

“Our commitment to our patients is total, and for this reason we give a key place to the training of health professionals. To this end, we organize sessions specific to the cancerology activity to train and raise awareness among the health professionals of the department and thus make screening for these cancers more accessible.”concludes the patrician.
