Have you ever heard of superbugs? These micro-organisms worry scientists around the world for a very simple reason: they are resistant to antibiotics, that is to say the drugs that are used to treat infections of bacterial origin. In the Enterobacterales family, we find several “super-bacteria”: bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) And Klebsiella pneumoniaein particular, are capable of resisting third-generation cephalosporins (antibiotics used in particular to combat meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis) and carbapenems (powerful and broad-spectrum antibiotics).

Bacteria that resist antibiotic drugs

At present, the challenge is to avoid the spread of these “super-bacteria” which are therefore extremely difficult to eradicate. Yes, but here it is: according to an Anglo-Portuguese study, which will be presented at the end of the month at the congress of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), our pets could promote the dissemination of these micro -dangerous organisms in our environment… To reach this worrying conclusion, the researchers studied samples of skin, urine and feces from 5 cats, 38 dogs and 78 humans distributed in 43 homes in Portugal, and of 22 dogs and 56 humans living (…)
