The Sud-Gironde hospital center in Langon (Gironde) has been offering since October 2024 a better level of care for people diabetics, the elderlypatients who have pathologies cardiovascularwith the development of its “Wounds and healing” service, in outpatient medicine.
Ulcers, diabetes, burns…
It supports the chronic wounds, perforating pain, ulcers, bedsores, diabetic feet, complicated post-operative wounds, burnsetc.
It totals 2 900 consultations in 2023. “A four-week chronic wound must be treated quickly, it is essential for the patient,” underlines Professor Eric Ducasse, vascular surgeon at the Bordeaux University Hospitalwho has been consulting and operating at Langon hospital since 2018.
“The wounds and healing consultation has existed for several years at the day hospital,” says Dr. Pierre Bandon, who arrived at the hospital in June 2023. In 2010, there was a nursing and post-stomatology consultation. Then arrived Marielle Baland, stoma therapist nurse, and Dr Jérémy Papin in 2019-2020 to provide medical support to the nurses. »
The Wounds and Healing Department team
The team today consists of three doctors, two full-time nurses and two part-time nurses. Dr Maïlys Ducours also works on infectious diseases.
“The support comes from different sectors, notably liberal doctorsso that we can manage complex wounds, continues Dr. Bandon. We are bringing forward projects for the management of these wounds,” continues Dr Pierre Bandon.
This day hospital brings together all our specialties within the same structure (infectious disease specialist, vascular specialist, dietician, etc.). This provides optimized quality of care.
Complete support
The strengthening of the wounds and healing service makes it possible to bring together 3 to 4 specialists for half a day to address comprehensive patient care. He only has to have one consultation at the hospital.
Patients often arrive in a major emergency.

“Most patients are diabetic or arteritic (with damaged arteries), suffer from plantar wounds, adds Dr. Bandon. Patients often arrive in a major emergency. It is necessary to do a blood test, an arterial Doppler ultrasound, the opinion of the infectious disease specialist and the dietician to ensure healing. We take an overall look in order to optimize patient care. »
“Diabetes is exploding”
Previously, the patient came for a consultation and the doctor tried to get the opinion of a specialist here and there. “The objective is to prevent catastrophic situations so as not to end up in the operating room. In case of complex dressing, there is an orientation towards thehome hospitalization (HAD),” which Dr. Bandon also looks after.
“We have more and more requests from general practitioners in the South Gironde a you Lot-et-Garonne as soon as there is a wound. They know there is rapid support. »
There are more and more vascular problems in both men and women.
Professor Eric Ducasse notes that patients are increasingly older.
More and more vascular problems
“Previously,” he adds, “we mainly treated venous lesions. Now, there are more and more vascular problems in both men and women. This Thursday morning, I consulted 38 patients (reduction of the carotid artery, aneurysms). There is a real demand and the service makes it possible to take care of these patients. We concentrate advice and care. We can treat patients on an outpatient basis in vascularization with simple technical procedures (stent placement) in addition to the Bordeaux University Hospital. »
The surgeon emphasizes the importance of cardiovascular mortality in France and the explosion of diabetes.
