Fitting is becoming simpler and simpler and can bring big benefits to all golfers, or at least allow them to save shots at a lower cost. We took advantage of a snowy day to meet John Lawson, and ask him to explain how.

E.S.

“I am lucky not to have had to make any concessions in my swing, because my clubs were adapted”estimated Tiger Woods. Although it was initially used to optimize the performance of professional gamers, the fitting – from the English custom fitting, or tailor-made – is still too often associated with the high level.

“I see all categories of players come through my studio, from near-beginners to tour players, including increasingly younger children too,” explains the English specialist John Lawsonwho played on the Challenge Tour. And to detail the consequences that an unsuitable grip, head or shaft can have on all swings and all trajectories…

Why make even more difficult?

The goal of fitting is to match the clubs and the player: his morphology, his physical abilities, his swing, his level and his objectives. Or without going, like his compatriot Nick Faldoto the point of asserting that “90% of amateurs use golf clubs that are not suited to their game,” he notes that many do not have adequate equipment.

Major manufacturers and retailers have made great efforts in the wake of Pingwith its color code system and so-called static fittings. The contribution of « launch monitors » is also undeniable. However, too few players choose their clubs following a fitting.

Analysis tools and in-depth knowledge of how they work have become mandatory

During a typical session, John Lawson goes further in morphological measurements and completes them with other, dynamic ones, carried out using a state-of-the-art launch monitor and Gearsa comprehensive 3D swing and body analysis system used by golf players PGA Tourfitters and club makers. “Analysis tools and in-depth knowledge of how they work have become mandatory to be sure of the effectiveness of head, shaft and grip combinations”affirms the one who is involved in the training of future teachers in Golf National.

At the forefront of adaptation

John Lawson goes even further, to better satisfy tailor-made purists. Those who distinguish between « custom built »these slightly adapted “factory” clubs, and the « custom fit » worthy of the name, that is to say clubs manufactured by a « clubmaker » professional. If it has fitting trolleys from many brands, it also offers irons from the brand Miura which he assembles himself.

John Lawson uses another expensive tool that has proven itself on the professional circuits – a SAM PuttLab (dedicated analyzer) – in order to offer fittings de putters of different brands. What still sets it apart is that it also sells putters, wedges and irons Edel. “With their unique fitting system, I can make many adjustments”.
