José Maria Olazabal, 58 years old, winner of the 1994 and 1999 Masters, plays the crucial role of caddy for his nephew, Joseba Torres, entered among the 155 other players present in Tarragona (Spain) at PQ3 of the European Cards (November 8-13 ).

It's the great story of the week. It will be even more so if Joseba Torres manages to secure one of the 20 places (and ties) at stake to progress on the DP World Tour 2024-25 in possession of a category 18. This young Spanish golfer, 22 years old, is the nephew of the legendary Jose Maria Olazabaldouble winner of the Masters in 1994 then in 1999 and incidentally icon of the European team of Ryder Cupas a player (including his alter ego Severiano Ballesteros) or as captain (victorious at Medina in 2012).

The Basque, 58, thus chose to carry the bag of his nephew, former Spanish under-16 champion, during this marathon in six rounds (cut after 72 holes) which represents the PQ3 of the European Cards. He himself played these Cards in 1985 when he was not yet 20 years old.

Whatever he says, I say yes, let's go and do it because I really trust him.

Joseba Torres, about her uncle, José Maria Olazabal

« I'm very lucky to have my uncle by my sideunderlined Joseba Torres on the official website of the European Tour. I trained a lot with him and to have him by my side with his experience and knowledge, I am very lucky. He knows how to play the shot, what to do in a certain situation, everything that you don't really master when you play alone. With him it's so easy because he tells you exactly what you need to do. »

« He has been with me since I started playing golf at the age of threehe continues. Of course in a tournament it's different, but he's always been with me and he really knows my game. Whatever he says, I say yes, let's go and do it because I really have confidence in him. I know he won't say anything I don't need to, so I really trust him. »

Eight French people in PQ3

The mayonnaise seems to be taking hold in any case since at the end of the first round played on the Lakes Course of Tarragona (Catalonia), Joseba Torres posted a card of 69 (-2). He provisionally occupied 48th place in the company of the Englishman Eddie Pepperell and Scottish Stephen Gallacher50 years old, four times winner on the European Tour between 2004 and 2019 and winner of the Ryder Cup 2014 has Gleneagles (Scotland).
