“The Bear” is an Emmy beast. The FX series just broke its own record for the most Primetime Emmys won by a comedy series in a single year, scoring 11 trophies during the 76th Emmys. That’s an improvement over last year’s 10 Emmys, which was the previous record for a laffer.
Big wins on Sunday night included lead comedy actor (Jeremy Allen White, as Carmy), supporting comedy actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, as Richard “Richie” Jerimovich), supporting comedy actress (Liza Colón-Zayas, as Tina) and directing (Christopher Storer for “Fishes” or Ramy Youssef for “Honeydew”).
Heading into the Primetime Emmys on Sunday, “The Bear” Season 2 had already won seven Creative Arts Emmys last weekend. Wins included Jamie Lee Curtis (as Donna Berzatto) and Jon Bernthal (as Michael Berzatto), who won guest comedy actress and guest comedy actor, respectively, for the episode “Fishes”; and outstanding casting for a comedy series (won by Jeanue Bacharach, Maggie Bacharach, Jenifer Rudnicke, Mickie Paskal and AJ Links).
Additional wins during Creative Arts included picture editing for a single-camera comedy (Joanna Naugle, for “Fishes”); sound mixing for a comedy or drama series (half-hour) and animation, for the episode “Forks” (awarded to Steve “Major” Giammaria, Scott D. Smith, Patrick Christensen and Ryan Collison); cinematography for single camera series (half-hour), also for “Forks” (awarded to Andrew Wehde, director of photography); and sound editing for a comedy or drama series (half-hour) and animation (also for “Forks”), won by Giammaria, Andrea Bella, Evan Benjamin, Jonathan Fuhrer, Annie Taylor, Jason Lingle, Jeff Lingle, Leslie Bloome and Shaun Brennan.
It’s been a year of breaking records for “The Bear.” In July, the second season of the hit FX series, which aired in June 2023, led the tally for comedy series with 23 nominations, including outstanding comedy series. That surpassed the 22-nomination Emmy record held by NBC’s “30 Rock” since 2009.
During the 75th Emmys, Season 1 of “The Bear” landed wins for best comedy series, best supporting actress in a comedy (Ayo Edibri), best supporting actor in a comedy (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), best actor in a comedy (Jeremy Allen White), and best writing and best directing for a comedy series (both Christopher Storer).
Created by Christopher Storer, the dramedy follows Carmy (White), an award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to manage his late brother’s sandwich shop and together with Sydney (Edebiri), turns it into a high-end restaurant.
