On Tuesday, August 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the successful test of the first Ukrainian ballistic missile.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday, August 27, the successful test of a first Ukrainian-made ballistic missile, a few days after welcoming the appearance on the front lines of a long-range missile drone.

“The first Ukrainian ballistic missile has been successfully tested. I congratulate our defense industry for this,” Zelensky said at a news conference in kyiv, while refusing to “give more details.” on this new weapon.

A pair of wings attached to the missile

These missiles have a trajectory that is essentially called “ballistic”, that is, influenced only by gravity and the speed acquired by the impulse provided at the time of propulsion. On August 25, Volodymyr Zelensky also welcomed the arrival in combat of a new long-range missile drone, called “Palianytsia”.

“Yesterday the first successful combat use of our new weapon took place,” he wrote on social media, without giving further details. This new drone, whose name “Palianytsia” refers to a traditional Ukrainian bread, “was developed in our country to destroy the offensive potential” of Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky had supported.

According to videos posted on social media, the device, powered by a turbojet, visually resembles a missile on which a pair of wings is attached. The Ukrainian defense industry, often aided by Western funding or partnerships, has grown significantly since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. At the end of 2023, Volodymyr Zelensky had assured that his country would produce a million drones by 2024 to meet the needs of the army, these devices having established themselves as essential on the battlefield.
