‘Monsters,’ the Menendez season, drops first look at the brothers

The Menendez Brothers are back in the pop culture spotlight.

Netflix revealed the first look at Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Storyshowcasing newcomers Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital) and Cooper Koch (They/Them) as Lyle and Erik, respectively, as well as Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny as the parents these two boys were convicted of killing, José and Mary Louise “Kitty.”

The key cast in character arrive as part of a new teaser and first-look imagery, one week after the announcement that all episodes will launch on Netflix this Sep. 19.

The first look arrives in the form of a Menendez family photo shoot, where the smiles for the camera quickly dull to reveal the real tragedies underneath.

“I need to know what’s going on with you and the boys,” Sevigny’s Kitty asks Bardem’s Jose. “I need to know. I don’t want there to be anymore lies between us. I won’t tell anyone.”

Following the success of DAHMER — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Storywhich saw American Horror Story regular Evan Peters playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer opposite Niecy Nash-Betts as Glenda Cleveland, Netflix leaned into the anthology format and Monster became Monsters for season 2, from creators and executive producers Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.

The real Lyle and Erik were convicted of the murders of their parents in 1996 and are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole. The prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, but the brothers claimed they committed these acts after a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse inflicted by their parents. Monsters season 2 will dive into the historic case.
