Mariel the Lawyer, the Puerto Rican who sings to Emma Coronel, wife of “El Chapo” Guzmán

Saint John – Being a lawyer and a singer is not a very common combination at a professional level. Singing regional Mexican music, being Puerto Rican, is even less common. And if you add to that the factor of write and record a song dedicated to the wife of the convicted drug trafficker Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmanit is already something impossible to match.

This is the case of the singer Mariel Colon Miro, known professionally as Mariel the Lawyerwho for a year and a half has been making his way within the regional Mexican genre. Despite not being well known on the island, the artist has gained notoriety among the Hispanic community in the United States, thanks to her appearances on programs such as “Despierta América”, both as a lawyer and as a singer.. Especially since she is the main lawyer for the notorious Mexican drug convict, who is serving a life sentence in the United States, as well as his wife, Emma Coronel.

The latter is the focus of the most recent song composed by Colón Miró and Mario “Cachorro” Delgado, called “The Lady”. “It’s a song I’ve wanted to make for a long time, because she’s my friend first and then my client, because that’s how our relationship started. She moved to New York to go through the whole process with her husband (Guzmán) and I was there with her and we became friends. Then, her legal case came up where I was part of her legal team,” The lawyer, who has a law firm in Brooklyn, New York, explained. “She served a sentence and got out last year. She is a young woman who had to put all her plans and dreams on hold to finish this chapter in her life. When she gets out, she wants to resume all those plans, but the reality is that many have put a seal on her for the crimes she was accused of and for which she served.”

With this song, Colón Miró wanted to show the public and society that the mistakes of the past are not what define a person. “The idea is to not allow that past to defeat us and to rise again like the Phoenix and believe in second chances.”highlighted the Puerto Rican who has recorded eight singles in her career, all in regional Mexican music rhythms. “At one point I told her I wanted to make a song about her life, but focused on motivating people, women, and teaching them that it is possible and that they should believe in second chances. She accepted, I showed her the song, she listened to it and loved it very much.”

One of the conditions of Coronel’s probation is that he has to work, however, according to the lawyer, no one wanted to give him a chance. That is why, once the song was recorded, Colón Miró had the idea of offering him a job as a model for the video. “In this way, I am giving her her first work experience and, in addition, she is fulfilling one of her dreams, which was to be a model. In this way we also sought to expose her so that other people would consider her in the future.”added the singer, who recorded the video for the song “La señora” in Naguabo and Cidra. “She accepted, and said and done. Many doors have opened for her and we are already in talks to model with clothing brands and for her to make her own lines of different items. So we are really very happy.”

According to the lawyer, the song “La señora” will be part of an EP, or short album, which she has been working on for the past few months and which she hopes will be available to the public by the end of the year. She is still not sure how many songs the album will have, or whether she will be accompanied on one of the tracks by a regional Mexican music artist, although she has spoken with several people. What is clear is that they will be songs within the regional Mexican genre, but with different subgenres such as ranchera, corridos, sierreño, banda and cumbia.

Recently, Mariel la Abogada had the opportunity to sing alongside the star of Mexican regional music, Carin Leonduring her concert at the Puerto Rico Coliseum in front of a full house. During her short participation, the Puerto Rican singer performed with León the song “Qué me vas a dar”, made popular by the late Jenni Rivera.

“The response from the audience was incredible, although I think they didn’t know much about the song we sang. Despite that, I feel super happy because, apart from singing with one of my idols, Carín León, I was at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, in my home and on the most important stage in Puerto Rico. For me it was a dream come true and I am very happy with the opportunity that Carín gave me.”said the young woman, who studied Law at Hofstra University in New York.

This moment in the show allowed the local audience to hear the young woman’s powerful voice live and to see her in person. “Many people recognize me on the street as the lawyer, not as the singer, but I hope that will change little by little over time.”highlighted the Puerto Rican, who is the daughter of the musician and musical director Ito Colonwho has worked with Lucecita Benítez and Chucho Avellanet, among others. “A few years ago I did several podcasts with Molusco and I am still surprised by the number of people who tell me ‘you are the lawyer who dated Molusco.’”

Despite the momentum of her career as a singer, Colón Miró does not plan to stop working as a criminal lawyer, as she is passionate about it and it gives her financial stability. That is why she decided to name her stage name Mariel la Abogada. “The public first got to know me as a lawyer, when I spoke in the media about the case of Joaquín Guzmán, but it is very important for me that people remember that, in addition to being a singer, I will continue to be a lawyer for the rest of my life.”he concluded.
