Discovery and profile of Sormano as an appetizer

Located in the province of Como, the Sormano Pass is an unmissable challenge for mountain cycling enthusiasts. This climb, although less famous than the great Alpine passes, is distinguished by its technical requirements and its unique charm. Taken by the most seasoned cyclists, notably during the legendary Tour of Lombardy, it remains a feared event, but also a hidden treasure for those who dare to climb it. It will be on the program for Lombardy 2024 on October 18 during the 118th edition of the classic of the dead leaves.

Historical

The Sormano pass, and more particularly its eponymous wall, entered cycling history in the early 1960s, when the Tour of Lombardy decided to integrate this infernal climb into its route. The “Muro di Sormano”, a 2 km wall with slopes reaching 27%, quickly became a legend. Removed from the route in 1963 due to its extreme difficulty, it returned in 2012, becoming a flagship stage of the “Classica delle foglie Morte”. This part of the pass will not be used on the 2024 edition.

Description of the ascent from Nesso, version of the Tour of Lombardy 2024

Profile sormano pass tour of Lombardy 2024

Starting from Nesso, a small picturesque village nestled on the shores of Lake Como, the ascent of the Sormano pass begins gently. The road winds along the water’s edge, and one could almost get distracted by the stunning views of the mountains reflected in the lake, but the real challenge lies ahead.

The first kilometers are deceptive, with moderate slopes oscillating between 4 and 6%. Lush vegetation surrounds the road and creates a natural shaded tunnel. However, as you go further inland, the apparent calm of the route gives way to an increasingly arduous climb.

After leaving the shores of the lake, the landscape becomes wilder. The road tightens, the turns multiply, and the percentages begin to flirt with 8 to 10%. The silence is only interrupted by the sound of tires on the asphalt and the shortness of breath of the cyclist. Each pedal stroke requires more and more effort, but the thought of reaching Sormano pushes you to keep going.

The last 10 kilometers are a real test of will. The road becomes more winding, offering spectacular views of the lake below at every turn. But these views are only a brief distraction from the gradually steepening slope. The air becomes cooler and the altitude is felt.

As you approach the summit, the trees begin to thin out, giving way to a rockier landscape. The slope seems endless, but when you finally cross the top of Sormano Pass, the panoramic view is a reward worth every drop of sweat. Calm reigns at the summit, with only a few cyclists sharing this moment of triumph.

The Sormano pass, although little known to the general public, represents a majestic challenge for all cycling enthusiasts. From Nesso, the climb is gradual but relentless, and if the summit is difficult to reach, it is all the more rewarding. For those looking for a climb that is both wild and technical, this is a must, an adventure where each turn brings you a little closer to the myth.
