And the news that has set the internet ablaze over the last 48 hours has already sparked light-hearted calls for the Oasis to return to the town that gave the band its name and even play at the very same venue – if it still exists then.
The Manchester band owes at least a small part of its monumental success to Swindon and the currently-closed Oasis Leisure Centre – which Swindon Borough Council have said will be reopened in 2026.
It has been widely reported over the years that the very same sports hall and music venue is what led to the Gallaghers settling on the name Oasis.
On April 28 1991, Noel was working as a roadie for Inspiral Carpets at the time and they were playing a gig in Swindon, at the Oasis Leisure Centre.
Liam – 19 at the time – was said to be taken with the name Oasis after seeing it on a poster, suggesting to Noel that it would be a better fit for his own band than its previous name, The Rain.
Noel was thought to be unconvinced initially but did go for it in the end – and the rest they say, is history.
One of the brothers has also performed at the very same venue – with Liam bringing Beady Eye to the town in 2011, two years after the break-up of Oasis.
Incredible as it might seem now, the gig was not a sell-out but thousands still packed the sports hall and music venue for the event.
That very same sports hall is soon to be demolished as part of plans to refurbish and reopen the Oasis Leisure Centre which has been closed since 2020.
In April this year, Liam Gallagher reportedly began renting a £16,950 a month mansion not far from Swindon near Stroud with his fiancee Debbie Gwyther.
The mansion has 11 rooms including a gym, sauna, ballroom and a meditation room, and Gallagher also owns a home in North London and a mansion in France.
It has been suggested that Oasis plan to perform a series of shows next year, including 10 at Wembley Stadium which would beat the record that popstar Taylor Swift set at the venue this year.
The return announcement was teased on Sunday, August 25, with the Manchester brothers sharing a short clip in the same font and style as the Oasis’ famous logo that appeared on their social media accounts on Sunday.
It showed the date 27.08.2024 before then saying 8am, and it also showed up at the end of both Liam’s set at the Reading Festival and a 30,000-strong Blossoms gig at at Wythenshawe Park on Sunday.
