Formula 1 | Verstappen's 2021 Silverstone crash was 'the worst' for Newey

Adrian Newey has cited Max Verstappen's 'horrific' crash at Silverstone in 2021 as the worst moment of his career with Red Bull.

Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen collided in Copse, the contact sending Verstappen crashing into the barriers with a 51G impact, with the Dutchman taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

Verstappen, meanwhile, revealed – just over three years later – that he suffered vision problems during the 2021 US GP, which he linked to that crash at Silverstone.

The British designer, who left the team to join Aston Martin , where he will take up the role in a few weeks, feared Max could be “seriously injured” immediately after the crash.

“I mean, I hate all the accidents in F1, they're horrible, sometimes they really are.”

“I think Max's at Silverstone was the worst for me. And the last one where we were wondering: 'Is he okay? Is he seriously injured?' And then when he came on the radio, he was so out of breath, he was just grunting, and you don't know what that means.”

“He was very sore. He had a pretty nasty concussion. He was very sore for a week afterward, but he was fine.”

“This kind of accident can still happen.”

“I also remember that of Spa in Formula 2 with Anthoine [Hubert]which was horrible. It will never be 100% safe.”
