Replacing Daniel Ricciardo at Racing Bulls, Liam Lawson openly admits that he covets Sergio Pérez's seat for the 2025 F1 season.
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko recently threw a wrench into the mix by announcing that a decision would be made at the end of the season, after Abu Dhabi, regarding the Red Bull drivers for 2025.
This announcement puts even more pressure on Sergio Pérez, who is struggling this season with up-and-down performances. In this context, Liam Lawson, young talent and potential favorite to replace Pérez, attracts attention.
Lawson, fearless against Verstappen
Despite only having a few races under his belt in Formula 1, Lawson appears in no way intimidated by the idea of being partnered with two-time reigning world champion Max Verstappen. In a recent interview, Lawson bluntly stated that he saw this possible partnership as an exceptional opportunity to move forward.
“No, I'm not afraid of that,” he declared, even adding that “I wouldn't want anyone else as a teammate than Max. He's the best in the sport.”
According to him, racing alongside Verstappen would be a unique opportunity to learn from best practices, analyze his data, and observe how the champion approaches each race:
“That would be the ultimate challenge for me.”
A close observation of the champion's methods
Since joining Red Bull as a reserve driver, Lawson has had the chance to study Verstappen up close. This immersion allowed him to understand the champion's working methods and observe his rigorous approach.
Lawson says he learned a lot from him, particularly how he communicates his needs to the team and adjusts the balance of the car.
“Being in the garage and listening to the exchanges with the radio headset, I was able to see and hear everything up close for two years. Max is clear and direct when giving his opinion, which is essential in Formula 1” Lawson points out.
A possible explosive duo for 2025
If Red Bull chooses to give Lawson a chance in 2025, the team could well field one of the most promising and competitive duos on the grid. By pitting himself against Verstappen, Lawson would see an opportunity to push his own limits and develop at the highest level.
For now, the young New Zealand driver is keeping a cool head and remaining focused on his objectives: “If I get the opportunity in the future, I will do everything I can to make the most of it.”
