While DAZN is struggling to increase its number of subscribers, Canal+ continues to achieve very good audiences with its sports programs. The proof again with Sunday's figures.
It's a not really subliminal message, slipped by Canal+ into its TV spot to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the encrypted channel. In a sequence of true-false fiction, we see a Canal manager discussing Ligue 1 quite clearly.
“We did everything for French football! Is this how we get thanked? How much do they ask? 1 billion! It’s not just Ligue 1…”the character chokes. At the same time, Canal+ highlights its other flagship programs, series, original creations and sport. We thus see images of F1 and Top 14.
Bayonne-Toulouse on Canal+, a better audience than OM-PSG on DAZN
The worst part of all this is that the figures rather prove Canal+ right.
According to PureMediasCanal+ achieved its season record this Sunday, with an average audience share of 4.5% among viewers aged 4 and over. These included the Malaysian Grand Prix (MotoGP) and a spectacular Brazilian Grand Prix (Formula 1).
In the evening, the Top 14 match between Aviron Bayonnais and Stade Toulousain brought together 768,000 viewers. This is the second best audience of the season for the French rugby championship, despite the absence of certain internationals on the Toulouse side. These figures, if they remain lower than those that Canal+ was able to achieve in the past with the big Ligue 1 posters on Sunday evenings, remain very satisfactory. And this confirms that a Bayonne-Toulouse in the Top 14 automatically attracts more audience than Ligue 1 this season, even for an OM-PSG, because the number of DAZN subscribers would be between 400,000 and 500,000 at l current time.
