Formula 1 | Lawson 'delighted' to be eighth, Tsunoda 'surprised' to be 18th

Liam Lawson signed one of the great performances of the Sprint qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, with eighth place. The RB driver beat his teammate but also Sergio Pérez, his direct competitor for a seat for next year, and he is delighted to have arrived in SQ3.

“I'm very happy, it's a good step forward. It's positive because we've made progress since this morning, the track was very difficult this morning, and everyone has progressed too, so I'm delighted that what we did worked” Lawson said.

“I am happy with the work of everyone in the team, it will be difficult tomorrow but we will aim for points. We had difficulties this morning on the long stints but we were on soft tires, so anything is possible, we will do do our best but it will be a difficult race.”

Yuki Tsunoda did not complete SQ1 and seems incomprehensible: “It was a difficult qualification, I didn't have any rhythm. My lap was pretty good, I'm surprised to be so far away. It's a feeling in general. The lap I did in my last run attack should have put me in SQ3, and I'm only 18th so I'm surprised.”

The Japanese is not overflowing with confidence ahead of the Sprint tomorrow: “I don’t know what we can do from 18th place, but I will do my best to move up, and we will see if we can do anything to improve the car.”
