For several days, Fernando Alonso fans and Formula 1 observers have been wondering about his absence from several media meetings and tests planned ahead of the Grands Prix.
This mystery began during the race in the United States, where the double world champion already showed signs of indisposition. The situation was then repeated in Mexico, where Aston Martin announced a delay in its participation, entrusting the wheel to Felipe Drugovich for the first free practice session as was the case for rookies in other teams.
On the occasion of his 400th Formula 1 Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso still wanted to take part in the race, even if he seemed visibly affected by mysterious fatigue. The driver encountered numerous technical problems, including overheating of the brakes, which forced him to retire prematurely.
Although his motivation remained intact, his performance inevitably raised questions. In the paddock, several rumors then circulated, fueling speculation around his state of health.
A hasty return to Europe
Faced with this unusual situation, Alonso made the decision to consult specialists in Europe after the Mexican Grand Prix. The tests led to the diagnosis of an intestinal infection, explaining the difficulties he went through during his last races.
Despite this infection, the Spanish driver managed to finish the race in Mexico, but his condition forced him to return briefly to Europe to begin appropriate treatment.
In order to manage his energy and maximize his chances of success in Brazil, Alonso therefore chose not to participate in Thursday's media obligations at Interlagos. This day is usually dedicated to driver impressions and preparation for the race, but he preferred to focus on his recovery.
To reassure fans, Aston Martin made it clear that Alonso would do everything possible to be fit on race day. Otherwise, reservist Felipe Drugovich, seen in the AMR24 in Mexico in EL1, would debut in Formula 1 in front of his home crowd.
Unwavering determination
Although some fear an impact on his performances, Alonso is ready to take on the challenge of this new event. Aston Martin has confirmed that the infection is not expected to compromise his participation in this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix, and doctors have given the OK for him to return to the wheel.
Supported by his team, Alonso seems more determined than ever to defend his colors on the Brazilian track, despite recent setbacks.
