“He’s in the top 20,” James Vowles’ controversial response to a former driver

After a season and a half spent in the premier category of motorsport, Logan Sargeant was ousted by the Williams team, following performances below his team’s expectations. In thirty-six Grand Prix appearances, the native of Fort Lauderdale has scored a single point, during the race meeting in the United States, on the Austin track in 2023. During the fifteenth round in the Netherlands, at Zandvoort , the Williams driver crashed his car during free practice 3 on Saturday.

Annoyed by the series of accidents and poor performances, James Vowles, team principal, put an end to his collaboration with the American. Since his replacement by the young prodigy, Franco Colapinto, the two cars are regularly in the battle for points. These are important units for the World Manufacturers’ Championship, in order to recover the cash prize at the end of the season, funds allowing the development of the car.

Better chances than in ?

In the recent podcast, “Beyond The Grid”, Williams boss James Vowles spoke about the qualities of his former driver, Logan Sargeant. According to him, the American did everything he could to improve and become faster. Asked about the future potential of the latter in the different categories in motorsport, such as the WEC, the WRC or even Indycar, the Briton gave an answer which, according to him, could be “controversial”.

“I think Logan gave me everything he had, but it wasn’t at the right level or the right value for what we needed, it’s as simple as that. It was never a lack of confidence, or a lack of will, or a lack of motivation on his part. He spent all the time he could making himself faster, but he was reaching the end of what he was capable of accomplishing. He’s a top 20 driver in motorsport, which is going to be controversial, and there are going to be a lot of people very frustrated with that statement, but that’s the level he’s at. He was only a tenth or two off. In previous years, a tenth or two would have kept you roughly in the right position, this is no longer the case today, it puts you back five places. He absolutely has the ability to be champion in many other series, there’s no doubt about that.”
