After touring the paddock to hope to find a steering wheel for the 2025 F1 season, Carlos Sainz Jr finally found the team and the project in which he was able to project himself into the future. From next year, the Madrilenian will be alongside Alex Albon within the historic Williams team. Last February, the Spaniard was unable to renew his contract with Scuderia Ferrari. To the amazement and surprise of the world of motorsport, Lewis Hamilton signed a contract for several seasons with Maranello. Following this announcement, number fifty-five found itself in a delicate situation.
Over half of this campaign, the latter thought for a long time about his final decision. The current Ferrari driver has knocked on several doors in the hope of finding a new refuge. After rumors of a potential arrival at Audi, Mercedes, Alpine or even Red Bull, the three-time Grand Prix winner was finally seduced by the words of James Vowles. The Grove stable best met the thirty-year-old’s expectations.
The right choice according to his father
During an interview given to the Spanish newspaper Marca, former Rally driver Carlos Sainz Sr spoke about the difficult choice his son had to make. The winner of the Dakar 2024 outlined the merits of his child, recalling his performances when he drove for Toro Rosso and Renault, single-seaters less competitive than Ferrari. With Williams’ latest advances, Sainz Sr is convinced that the English brand will be back in business in the following seasons.
“It is his decision and we must respect it. It was not an easy or clear decision. There were three or four options and ultimately he has to decide his future and we support him as much as possible. And that’s what we did. Williams has a growing project, at the end of the year he starts to work better and we have to hope, and we have confidence in him, that next year he will continue on an upward trend. Carlos left a good impression on the teams in which he worked, thanks to his work and his know-how. The teams improved after his arrival and that is what is important for a professional and what should always be expected of him. I think that in this respect Carlos is a serious driver and he knows very well where he is going. I have always been at his side in this area. As a father, me and my nephew gave him a hand, we studied all possible options. But my role has not changed.”
