The party turned into tragedy. While Real Sociedad hosted Real Madrid on Saturday night at the Reale Arena (Anoeta), a fan died on the way to the stadium. The 57-year-old reportedly received a violent blow to the head after falling down the stairs near gate number 5, El Diario Vasco and El Correo report.

People nearby alerted the emergency services and the autonomous police of the Spanish Basque Autonomous Community (Ertzaintza). The fan was taken care of around 8:45 p.m. before being taken to hospital, where he died shortly after 9:30 p.m.

An investigation opened

According to several witnesses, the victim was walking with a crutch and was partially paralyzed, as they had noticed before the fall. They also added that he lost consciousness immediately after the fall. The Ertzaintza announced the opening of an investigation.

This Sunday morning, the Basque club published a statement to pay tribute to the memory of the supporter, who will be honored next week. “Real Sociedad deeply regrets the loss of a member of the club, who died yesterday accidentally, while he was about to enter the Reale Arena. The txuri urdin club would like to express its most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased season ticket holder. The first team will play with black armbands on Tuesday in Mallorca and a minute’s silence will be observed at the Reale Arena during the match against Valencia on the 28th.”
