An error cost Gaël Guilaume dearly, on the UCI cyclo-cross in Gernelle, this Saturday morning. “I got off to a pretty good start, but in the woods I made a mistake and got caught in the tape. It derailed me”. Because of this incident, Ardennes CrossTeam member Gecibat saw his friend and rival Florian Féry take off at the front of the race. “I gave up ten seconds on Flo and found myself in traffic. We were three to four, I tried to accelerate again but I didn’t succeed”.
Victory therefore had little chance of coming to him, and there was only 2nd place to play for. “In the last lap I attacked before the descent, I managed to gain a few seconds and finish a little ahead of the group. The race was tough”sums up Gaël Guillaume who lost after winning the Saturday round at Pierric and the Dijon cyclo-cross, each ahead of Florian Féry. Maybe the conditions weren't the best for him this time. “I almost preferred last year (it had rained a lot, Editor’s note)it hit a little less. But it's still a super nice circuit not far from home, it feels good”.
Since Pierric, Gaël Guillaume has not really pulled the plug since he participated in the Middle and High School Cross-Country Pedestrian Championship last Wednesday, where he suffered a back injury. “The races are still in my legs, I wasn't in great shape but that wasn't the objective. I've been trying to be consistent since the start of the season, that bodes well”. Fortunately, he was able to take advantage of the start of the week to breathe, before approaching the Coupe de France in Troyes with the same desire to rest. “I'm going to recharge the batteries a little because Troyes is coming. The objective wasn't today, other than to regain points. Now it's preparation for Troyes”.
