Perimeter, closed shops… The details of the security arrangements for the athletes’ parade in Paris

For “the final mobilization of the police forces of the Olympic and Paralympic Games”, Laurent Nuñez returned this Friday, September 13, to the security measures applied for the big parade of athletes planned for this Saturday.

• Traffic restrictions from 10 a.m.

“Traffic in the Paris-Ouest area will be very complicated” with the parade of champions, warned the Paris police prefect. All motor vehicles will be banned from 10 a.m. The restrictions will end on Sunday, September 15 at noon.

• Shops at the top of the Champs-Élysées closed

Between the Champs-Élysées roundabout and Place de l’Étoile, all shops and establishments open to the public, with the exception of hotels, will be closed to the public this Saturday, September 14.

“This is an important measure that I have taken but which is justified by security requirements of not mixing audiences,” said Laurent Nuñez.

Between the Champs-Élysées roundabout and Avenue Georges V, the public is prohibited from access but the area will be used for preparations for the parade.

• An anti-terrorist protection perimeter

“Given the terrorist threat,” Laurent Nuñez unveiled an anti-terrorist protection perimeter from the Champs-Élysées roundabout to the Étoile.

There is no point for those without tickets or accreditation to try their luck with the 4,000 police officers and gendarmes mobilized. Exemptions will be granted, however, to local residents or for “urgent and essential” interventions.

“There will be checks with searches and frisking at the entrance to the perimeter and in addition we will require the production of the ticket and identity documents to ensure that the person is the right holder of the ticket,” continued the police prefect who recommended to the 70,000 people expected to come as early as possible. Access will be possible from 1 p.m.

Laurent Nuñez discourages people without tickets from going. “There is no point in showing up because you will not be able to get in.” A list of prohibited products is also in place for people wishing to go to the event.

• 4,000 police officers and gendarmes

The Minister of the Interior resigned,Gerald Darmaninannounced that 4,000 police officers and gendarmes will be mobilized to supervise the parade of Olympic and Paralympic Games athletes on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, this Saturday, September 14.

Some 70,000 spectators and nearly 300 athletes are expected for this parade on the capital’s legendary avenue.

Metro stations closed

Several metro stations will also be closed from noon this Saturday: Charles de Gaulle-Étoile (lines 1, 2, 6 and RER A), Argentine (line 1), Georges V (line 1), Franklin D. Roosevelt (lines 1 and 9), Boissière (line 6) and Kléber (line 6).

The terminus of line 6 will be at Trocadéro. The closures are expected to remain in place until Sunday morning, unless otherwise instructed by the police headquarters.
