In a report unveiled this Tuesday, the Department of Research, Studies and Evaluation of Statistics (Drees), Inserm and Public Health France have exhaustively dissected the medical aspects of death certificates recorded in 2022, to identify the major medical causes of mortality. An essential analysis to identify major epidemiological trends and guide public health policy.

The first observation is grim, but expected. As a result of the aging of the post-war generations, more and more people are dying in France. In 2022, 673,190 people died, more than in 2020 and 2021, two years marked by the Covid epidemic. Once corrected for the demographic effect, the mortality rate however returns to its 2021 level, i.e. 886.6 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. No sign of a major deterioration in public health. The fact remains that the trend decline in the corrected mortality rate observed from 2015 to 2019 is over.
