The Shōtōkan karate club of Montfort-le-Gesnois is delighted with the increase in the number of members and their diversity. Update with Nicolas Devanne, treasurer.

Le Maine Libre: How is the start of the year going?

Nicolas Devanne : “We went through several difficult years during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, like many other clubs. This year, we are very happy to see enthusiasm again, both among old and new members. Last year, we did not have more than 31 karatekas. It’s correct, but it’s still not much. On the other hand, this year, we already have around fifty members. This announces a very good year! »

How long has the club existed and what do you offer?

“The club was founded by Mickaël 17 years ago. Today, he is one of our teachers and gives lessons for children and adults on Monday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For 5 years, it has been Laurent Richard, our sensei, who has chaired the club. We also offer another slot for adults on Thursday evenings, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with David. Like many clubs, we offer free trial lessons and accept registrations throughout the year, adjusting prices. »

What are your goals?

“For 5 years, the club mainly functioned as a leisure club, friendly and family-friendly, due to the fact that karatekas did not show any interest in competitions. We want that to change. We already have Ronan among us, who recently obtained his black belt and who will most likely obtain his educator diploma. There is also Augustin, departmental champion in kata, who hopes to move up to the regional level. Both also participate in fighting competitions. One of our goals this year is to encourage more members to hit the tatami. We are seeing more and more women joining us, which is great news. Karate is a discipline accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical condition. It allows you to stay in shape, work on balance, reflexes, and much more. »
