The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were announced this Thursday, January 23, led by “Emilia Pérez”, by Jacques Audiard, nominated in 13 categories, a record for a non-English-speaking film

After Academy leadership acknowledged the impact of the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires, Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott revealed the nominees for the film industry’s most prestigious award, foreshadowing the race that will unfold in the coming weeks, culminating in the March ceremony. “Emilia Pérez” leads with 13 nominations, followed by “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” with 10 each.

The musical “Emilia Pérez” was successful despite some controversy. The four Golden Globes won by the film helped to assuage criticism of many aspects of the film, including Selena Gomez’s perceived difficulties with her character’s Spanish-language dialogue and various issues with the film’s depiction of the transgender community. . Despite all this, he beat out Roma and Tigre et Dragon for a foreign language film.

The Brutalist, from director Brady Corbet, stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones as Hungarian refugees who arrived in the United States after World War II. The film, which won a big prize at the Golden Globes, was recently mired in controversy over its use of artificial intelligence in dialect, with Corbet fiercely defending his performers amid the debate.

Wicked, on the other hand, certainly had the public vote, and this time it also translated into recognition through awards. The musical from director Jon M. Chu earned a Best Picture nomination as well as individual honors for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the latter of whom was nominated for the first time. Erivo had already been named for Harriet. (If she adds an Oscar to her collection of awards, she will achieve EGOT status, joining fewer than 30 artists who have each won Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tony Awards.)

With “Wicked” and “Emilia Pérez,” it is the first time that two musicals have been nominated for best film since 1968, when “Oliver! ” and “Funny Girl” were both nominated, according to the Academy.

The acting categories were largely dominated by first-time nominations, with 13 people getting their first Oscar nominations, including Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Isabella Rossellini and Zoe Saldaña. Conan O’Brien is set to host the ceremony, which will take place on March 2 and be broadcast on ABC.
