Aged 29, William Cloutier already has a good track record since his victory at Star Academy in 2021. Is ira, his first album, was launched in January 2022, it was part of the new version of the musical Starmania and is working on a second studio album which he hopes to release in March or April 2025. He also lends his voice to the bird Zazu in the new Disney film, Mufasa.
Your most beautiful memory of your time at Star Academy?
“The absolute euphoria was when I made my own composition (If to see me) in a variety gala. To postpone this step with my first composition for life, I couldn’t believe it. I remember pinching myself and not sleeping all night. I thought it was a dream. More than winning, in fact. It was a risk worth taking, but it opened the door to writing and composing in me. All of this ultimately led to my first album.”
What did each teacher give you?
«Gregory Charles, with all his musical knowledge, was very rich. For vocal technique, kindness and gentleness: the angel Lara Fabian. Just like being 100% me in the whole process. Ariane Moffatt, in the creative classes, gave us the space and permission to dare and the courage to try and make mistakes. Among the guests, Andréanne A. Malette spoke to us about the post-Star Academy. There was Xavier Dolan and Anne Dorval too.”
The most valuable advice you received from teachers?
“Listen to your instincts. I understood the weight of this when I made my composition by listening to this little inner voice. Also, that comfort is a hindrance to creation. You have to be willing to put yourself in danger. Go there when you’re afraid, to learn about what’s coming. This was the case with Starmaniaexactly.”
-What remains of Star Academy NOW?
“Memories for life, training for life, an audience that followed us, a relationship with the audience born in Star Academy and opportunities. It opened so many doors for me, winning Star Academy! Luc Plamondon was in the tour room of Star Academywhich led to Starmania. Everything is connected.”
What advice(s) would you give to the participants of the 2025 edition?
“The same one that served me: don’t be afraid to refuse a song that doesn’t fit with you, listen to your instinct if a song makes you vibrate.”
