TF1's new game did not meet with the expected success and after only two issues, the channel chose to relegate it to the second part of the evening.
Friday December 27, TF1 launched with great fanfare «Gladiators» . Adapted from an American format created in 1989, the game, presented by Jean-Pierre Foucault Denis Brogniart and Hélène Mannarino, pits sixteen gladiators, eight men and eight women, against ordinary candidates. “It’s a pure entertainment program with gladiators who will play the bad guys with a lot of self-deprecation and very serious sporting events which ask the challengers to surpass themselves”described Julien Degroote, director of development and creation of the TF1 group during the press conference.
Despite the extraordinary system and the advertising campaign deployed by TF1, the show, which is reminiscent of “Ninja Warrior”, did not arouse real enthusiasm among viewers. In fact, the first issue piqued the curiosity of only 1.9 million people, or 11.2% audience share. And in the second week, “Gladiators” literally plummeted, bringing together only 950,000 faithful, or 5.9% of the public.
Due to lack of audience, TF1 urgently cancels “Gladiators” after only two numbers broadcast
Faced with this industrial failure, TF1 immediately took the necessary measures in this type of situation, and therefore canceled the next episodes. Friday January 10, she will offer the show at 9:10 p.m. Jeff Panacloc Adventure 2024 and the following week, viewers will find Arthur in a new issue of “Tourists”. The last three episodes of “Gladiators” will be distributed between next Friday, in the second part of the evening, from 10:45 p.m., and the following Friday. They will also be made available on the TF1+ platform.
This Tuesday morning, at the microphone of Europe 1, Jean-Pierre Foucault reacted to this failure. “It’s true that we all messed up on “Gladiators”, we admit it, and the channel made the necessary decision, that is to say to broadcast in the second half of the evening”declared the host before putting things into perspective: “But you know, as they say, plants help you move forward. So the most important thing is to have more success than failures, which seems to me to be my case”.
