Reunions between the sovereigns of Brunei and the United Kingdom are always very warm. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah maintains an excellent relationship with King Charles III, just as it did during the reign of Elizabeth II. The Sultanate of Brunei gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1984. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah ascended the throne in 1967 and has reigned as an absolute monarch since his country’s independence.

King Charles III invited his Bruneian counterpart to an audience this Wednesday, December 18, while the Sultan is currently traveling in England. A few days ago, Prince Mateen Bolkiah, one of the Sultan’s sons, shared photos taken in the streets of London with his wife, Princess Anisha. It seems that the family is spending some private moments in the beautiful neighborhoods of the capital at the end of the year.

“This meeting further strengthens the close and long-standing relations and strong bonds of friendship between the members of the royal family and the people of the two countries”indicates the Borneo Bulletin. These few lines are the only explanations given at the meeting. The 78-year-old Sultan of Brunei gradually introduced Sharia law towards the end of 2013. The penal system based on Sharia law is intensifying over time. In 2015, the Sultan of Brunei formally banned Muslims in his country from purchasing Christmas-related items, under penalty of a heavy fine and a five-year prison sentence.
