The world of Spanish cinema is in mourning. Marisa Paredes, iconic actress who left her mark on Spanish and international cinema, has died at the age of 78, the Spanish Cinema Academy announced on Tuesday.
A rich and marked career by Almodóvar
Born in Madrid in 1946, Marisa Paredes made her screen debut at the age of 14. If his career began in traditional Spanish cinema, it was his meeting with Pedro Almodóvar in 1983 which gave him new notoriety. Their first collaboration, Entre tinieblas, marks the beginning of a series of major films, including “La flor de mi secreto” (1995), “All about my mother” (Todo sobre mi madre, 1999) and “La piel que habito” (2011). These roles allowed him to establish himself as one of the director’s muses.
The Spanish Cinema Academy paid tribute to “one of its most emblematic actresses, who leaves behind a long career with more than 75 appearances on screen.”
International recognition
Marisa Paredes did not limit herself to Spanish cinema. His talent opened the doors to international cinema, notably with a role in “La vita è bella” (1997) by Roberto Benigni, an Oscar-winning film.
She also made an impression in “The Devil’s Backbone” (El espinazo del diablo, 2001), a Spanish-Mexican horror film directed by Guillermo del Toro. In 2018, his exceptional career was recognized with an honorary Goya, the ultimate award for Spanish cinema.
With her unique presence and subtle acting, Marisa Paredes leaves behind a considerable cinematic legacy. An essential actress in auteur cinema, she has played complex characters, often imbued with great emotional intensity.
