The Spanish slogan “No pasarán” (They will not pass!) chanted by partisans during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) is making a strange comeback: it is the title of a rap song that will be broadcast on the evening of Monday, July 1, 2024 and which calls on young people to vote in the second round of the 2024 legislative elections.

Signed by a collective of rappers, including Fianso and Akhenaton (IAM), the song aims to denounce the rise of the extreme right in France.

A selection of sizes

Brought together under the leadership of producer and composer Djamel Fezari, aka DJ Kore, and artistic director Ramdane Touhami, the artists (Fianso, Akhenaton, Mac Tyer, Seth Gueko, Zola, ISK, Soso Maness etc.) began producing this ten-minute long piece the day after the European elections, which the National Rally (RN) finished in the lead.

“The situation is serious. When we learn that the leading party of young people is the RN, if we did not react, it would be a serious mistake on our part (…) it is our way of campaigning,” Ramdane Touhami told AFP about the single.

Punchlines from yesterday and today

Often incisive in his words, Not pass is full of punchlines addressed to Jordan Bardella, the boss of the RN, the Le Pen family (RN), or even Éric Zemmour (Reconquête!), denouncing the past of the French extreme right and police violence.

“This is the new version of Youth annoys the National Front “, punchline of a 40-year-old song, still chanted in demonstrations against the extreme right, believes Ramdane Touhami.

Calls to vote

Beyond this collective, other voices from the hip-hop sphere called for voting during the legislative campaign, like heavyweights like Soprano or DJ Snake.

Around a hundred organisations, such as Greenpeace France and SOS Racisme, also called on Sunday evening to vote against the RN in the second round of the legislative elections on 7 July.

Our “Rap” file

In 1997, seventeen French rap artists, including Akhenaton, had already signed “11’30 against racist laws”.

The funds generated by listening to the song will be donated to the Abbé Pierre Foundation.
