Closed since May 2023, the Matisse museum in Cateau-Cambrésis is renewing its route, with a scenography that is as refined as it is airy. The annexation of the former adjoining covered market added 1,000 m2 and raises it to the rank of great cultural facilities in the region.

The growth of the Matisse museum in Cateau-Cambrésis (North) would make any entrepreneur green with envy. The generosity of Henri Matisse, who had offered around a hundred works to his hometown in 1952, snowballed: donations from major artists of modern art, Giacometti, Mirò, Rouault and even Picasso, then followed. As a result, the institution inaugurated its third extension in half a century this weekend. Thanks to the acquisition by the City in 2012 of the former covered market, a vast brick hall from 1884, adjoining the historic episcopal palace, and a total budget of 13 million euros, the museum now covers 5,500 m2. “We were a museum of the 20the century with its modern equipment installed in 2002 during the last renovation, we are taking one more step to enter the 21ste century “explains Sophie Le Flamanc, deputy director of the museum.
