The castle and estate of Berg, overlooking the Alzette, were purchased from Baron Claude du Pasquier in 1845 by King William II of the Netherlands, who was also Grand Duke of Luxembourg. When Grand Duke Adolphe of the Nassau branch came to the throne, he bought the estate in 1891 from his Dutch royal cousins. The old castle was demolished by Grand Duke William IV and a new, more modern castle was inaugurated in 1911.

Garden parties are an opportunity for the Grand Ducal family to interact with citizens who have been distinguished in their sector of activity. Some of them are association representatives, heads of organizations having had contact with the Grand Ducal family during the year or personalities of the country. This Thursday, Mgr Jean-Claude Hollerich, Archbishop of Luxembourg, was present in the magnificent gardens of the sovereigns’ residence.

The guests took the opportunity to congratulate Guillaume, after the announcement made by Grand Duke Henri on the national holiday. The head of state announced that his eldest son would become his lieutenant representative from October, which will allow William to carry out tasks on his behalf that normally fall to the sovereign. The lieutenancy is the intermediate stage before the final abdication.
