“Almost 17 years old…”: on TF1, Céline Dion looks back on the beginnings of her neurological illness

She decided to tell everything. If for two years, Celine Dion has remained silent about the evil that is gnawing at her. But for Anne-Claire Coudray and TF1, she decided to speak with an open heart. This Sunday, June 16, 2024, the singer returned to stiff man syndrome, this illness which handicaps her on a daily basis.“It’s been several years, almost 17 years. It started in the voice”confides the singer.

“I had spasms in the middle of a concert where I was taking medication without really knowing”. She will then cancel shows, claiming false reasons. “ I found myself lying,”

she confides.

Celine Dion opens up about the lies she had to make up to keep up appearances

For Celine Dion, these lies were necessary. “It’s difficult because people can judge us. When you live with these things for a very long time, you say to yourself ‘the show must go on, I have to do the show, I have to be brave’. We put so much weight on ourselves that we’ll die and it’s not worth it when you’re a mother.”.
But today, there is no question for the singer to continue to hide.

“I have been an open book all my life, both my sorrows and my joys. I had no choice but to leave the stage. The disease took control of my vocal cords and my whole body, but I told myself,
I don’t want my children
be afraid and I don’t want to bear all this pain of lying anymore”
explains the singer.

His priority? Their children

Celine Dion wants to regain control of her life. “I want to stop reinventing myself. That’s enough. If it’s something that’s going to take me away, the newspapers shouldn’t say that I’m dead while I’m still alive.. I deserve to belong to myself for once”she continues assuring that she will “get back on stage”. “I don’t know when, it’s happening slowly.”

The artist now wants to tell his audience everything and no longer wants to hide anything from anyone. Touching and courageous confidences for the singer who suffers from stiff man syndrome.
