“I can’t talk about it”: Franck Gastambide forced to interrupt after a question from Léa Salamé
The rest after the ad
If there is one personality whose rise has been meteoric, it is Franck Gastambide. The actor has come a long way. At 46 years old, he is one of the sure values of cinema and comedy. If it started thanks to Kairahis other productions have proven to be a real success, like Pattaya, Taxi 5 and series such as Valid and soon The cage (around combat sports) which will be available on Netflix from November 15. It is precisely about this new project that Franck Gastambide came to speak with Léa Salamé on France Inter this Thursday, November 7.
Asked about his successes and his career before breaking into cinema, Franck Gastambide was also cooked about his childhood. A period that he thinks about regularly and about which it is not easy for him to talk. As proof, the man who was Sabrina Ouazani's companion for several years was forced to stop to swallow his tears and manage his emotion when Léa Salamé took him to the terrain of childhood: “It's been a long road, and along the way, we take a beating. And I try to be proud of the journey. It's not always easy” he said. As a reminder, Franck Gastambide suffers from dyslexia and dyspraxia, invisible disabilities which cause an ordeal for those who suffer from it, especially when they are diagnosed late.
Franck Gastambide: a first diploma at 45
Obviously, if Franck Gastambide has difficulty talking about the two disorders that caused him harm, he nonetheless remains proud of the journey he has made so far, he who did not believe in it like many others: “I didn't have confidence in myself. So I can't blame those who didn't believe in me. The journey has been strewn with pitfalls.” But if he is now enjoying success, that does not mean that the problems are behind him: “The list of things I cannot do and for which I feel totally humiliated and ridiculed is long. […] Reciting the alphabet in one go is also very complicated In my opinion. So there is this kind of paradox where sometimes, we people who have invisible disabilities, we will be better than others at certain things and then unable to participate in a board game. It's obviously sometimes very complicated to live with.“
But Franck Gastambide remains proof that this does not prevent success. Last July, he even obtained his first diploma at the age of 45 (he was made a knight of arts and letterseditor’s note) as he likes to remind us: “When I know the harm it did to my mother to have a child who was unable to obtain his secondary school certificate, it's a lot of emotion. […] I try not to blame anyone for thinking that because I too was thinking 'What am I going to do with myself?' I don't understand anything about the classes I attend, we're talking about a time where dyslexia isn't really detected so I was either an imbecile or a lazy person. Yet I felt like I was neither. I had no way of proving it.“However, he is certain of one thing after all these difficulties encountered which make him fear possible paternity:”I am convinced that the brain compensates, and that what we don't have on one side, we have on the other. For me, it developed a creativity that allows me to do this job but there are things that I am still incapable of. Unfortunately they are still there.“
