Olivier de Kersauson is not naturally a big talker. But he was even silent for a whole year! The 80-year-old navigator made rare confidences about this period.
Olivier de Kersauson is never the most sociable person in the room. Rather wild in nature and quite rough around the edges, the navigator prefers to sail alone on the oceans than to rub shoulders with his peers on land. In an interview given in 2019 to Paris Matchthis sea lover, now 80 years old, made a strange confession.
Olivier de Kersauson: “I didn't open my mouth for a year“
Olivier de Kersauson does not feel the desire to socialize on a daily basis, far from it. “I don't care about the image I give. I am impervious to the outside world, fundamentally misanthropic, and it's been a long time since I battened down the hatches.”he blurted. And his taciturnity is not new! “At 10 years old, I didn't open my mouth for a year. I never talked to people first. Simply, if someone speaks to me, I respond“, he explained.
The famous year of his 10th birthday, in 1954, the navigator and resident of the Big Heads of RTL experienced a tragedy that he prefers not to talk about. But at that time, in his misfortune, he saw a glimmer of hope. His father gave him a coconut which filled him with joy and even set in motion his future: “I'm not attached to objects. I don't care about anything else, but not this coconut. In my childhood, it was very rare to find them in Brittany. In there, as soon as my father gave it to me, I saw a whole world. Pirates, the sea, adventures.“
Olivier de Kersauson: his shelter on earth…”I like living here“
When he is not sailing the seas, the octogenarian still has a paradise on earth. He spends happy days in his mansion in Le Conquet, near Brest, alongside his partner Sandra, a charming Polynesian whom he married in 2014, almost 10 years after the death of his first wife, Caroline Piloquet-Verne. I
“I like living here, on my tractor, moving the earth. I have planted almost 5,000 trees. At night, when I'm not sleeping, I listen to the noises. The hooting cats, the wind in the branches, the rustling of animals, the sea, over there, which consoles me for everything. I organized my life to see her“, detailed the man who has a 44-year-old son, named Arthur.
