Legendary figure of the French music scene, Serge Gainsbourg died at the age of 62 on March 2, 1991. During his life, the musician lived for a long time in a home located on rue de Verneuil in Paris. His famous Parisian house has today become a museum to his glory. However, he had abandoned this historic residence to live in Burgundy during the last months of his life. In fact, Serge Gainsbourg moved to the Domaine de l'Espérance, with starred chef Marc Meneau, between July 1990 and January 1991. At the time, he had taken over the mill's dovecote, which he had converted into his taste. The singer thus resided in room number 30 of this area with which he had fallen in love. In this famous 85 square meter room, he had brought several objects that were very dear to him.
Indeed, Serge Gainsbourg lived in this famous mill with the teddy bear from his childhood, paintings, but also his electric piano. The starred chef Marc Meneau also spoke about the presence of the famous singer within his establishment in the columns of the magazine Paris Match, found by AD Magazine. “Serge called us in June; he wanted to rest, to write his album. He had called ten times, worried, to make sure his room was booked. To see if he could bring some objects of his own, two paintings, his teddy bear. My wife and I had drawn his room for him, so that he could reassure himself. He appreciated it.”declared Marc Meneau in particular. The famous chef then claimed that Serge Gainsbourg had eaten exactly 160 meals in his establishment.
Serge Gainsbourg “acted like a duck” when there was too much noise in Marc Meneau's restaurant
“In the evening when Serge was at the piano and there was too much noise in the room, he acted like a duck, shouting quack very loudly to silence the customers. To those who continued to speak he said: 'Where were you raised?' He liked to eat well, just as he liked to be well dressed, perfumed, and have everything tidy. Serge never left a full ashtray behind. When he left his room, it was spotless“, Marc Meneau also added about Serge Gainsbourg. L'Espérance finally closed its doors in 2015. For his part the chef is dead December 9, 2020at the age of 77.
