I'm crazy about this little one!” David Hallyday makes rare confidences about his grandson Harrison, the son of Ilona Smet

Télé-Loisirs: November 2 is the kickoff of Requiem pour un fou, your tour in which you cover your songs but also those of your father. It's the first time. Did you forbid yourself before?
David Hallyday : No, I'm not forbidding myself anything. It's not so much a story of “good times” but of triggers. I'm a very bad strategist, I do things when they come, when I have the time and the desire, and when it's interesting from a creative point of view. I thought my songs from the 1980s deserved to be reworked and re-recorded. I started with my songs and I said to myself “why not also redo those that I had composed for him?“. I started with the title Blood for bloodthen another… I found that there was a real synergy between his repertoire and mine, which are totally different. I then allowed myself to broaden the spectrum with songs that I had not composed. Without wanting to, I was continuing the story that I started with my father with Blood for Blood, which is a story of fatherhood and transmission.

Precisely, your tour highlights transmission. What is important to leave to your children and grandchildren?
The work accomplished by the generations that came before us. I find it beautiful what has been left in the family for several generations. It's important to leave this mark to my children. In a world that lacks values, it is necessary.

In June 2022, your daughter Ilona gave birth to her first child, Harrison. What was your reaction to learning that you were going to be a grandfather at 56?
I wasn't ready at all! I wasn't old enough! [Il rit.] We did everything very early at home: we had children young, we started young… I'm crazy about this little one, he's wonderful. There are truly magical things in life. Between him and me, there is something special. It's crazy, it's amazing.

When we see him on stage again, it's strange to think that Johnny would have been a great-grandfather…
Yes, it's crazy. Great-grandfather at 75 is young too. He would have been so proud.
