“A mentally retarded person”: Nicoletta without language to talk about her mother and her childhood

This October 20, 2024, Frédéric Lopez hosted a new episode of A Sunday in the Country. At his side, Matthieu Lartot, Alexandre Kominek and Nicoletta. And it was the singer who insisted on speaking first. During this episode, she returned to her career but also to her private life. Especially when the presenter asked her what she would say to the little girl she was before.
“I grew up in a village. My grandmother had land and her garden where she grew vegetables, and she worked in the factory,” she remembers.

But the singer will quickly change her mood when she talks about her parents: “I didn’t have one, my mother had mental health issues. She was so kind. I would say she was what you would call mentally retarded”she says.

Nicoletta opens up about her family

Nicoletta then describes her mother’s behavior: “She had the mind of a little girl in the body of a young woman. As a result, she had to play doctor in the village barns with the son of the neighbor from the house opposite, and I was born nine months later in April.. Faced with his mother’s incapacity, his grandmother will raise him. “My mother did what she could, I was a bit like her doll. But I loved my mother a lot because people like her have no malice. I always thought that my mother was an angel”she confides with emotion.

And it was by seeing the looks of others that the singer, who opened up about her money problems, understood that her mother was different: “Because of the other children. Around 7-8 years old, I had to fight with the boys because they didn’t care about my mother and I protected her”.

The singer confides in her mother’s mental distrust

As a loving child, Nicoletta wanted to defend her mother from all these criticisms: “I had to arm myself early against adversity.”

Very concerned about her mother’s happiness, Nicoletta wanted to protect her. “We want to give her her knowledge. When the Christmas holidays came, it irritated me that she didn’t know how to read or write. I sat with her on a table, I took notebooks and postcards, I made her write the letters to her family for the wishes. She copied what I wrote, I spent the afternoon there.
It was important and I was very happy about it”
. A moving testimony.
