Located in the heart of Montmartre, the “Chez Michou” cabaret was an emblematic Parisian institution. Founded in 1956 by Michel Catty, known as Michou, this place staged transformation shows combining glamour, humor and extravagance. Michou, with his flamboyant personality and his iconic blue glasses, created a space where artists could express themselves freely and from the early years, his cabaret was distinguished by its transvestite shows, where talented artists transformed themselves into icons of the French and international song, like Dlida, Edith Piaf, or even Brigitte Bardot to name a few. After more than 60 years of success, Michou’s death in January 2020 marked the end of an era.

Declared in liquidation by the commercial court on July 16, 2024, this Mecca of Parisian nights had been in difficulty since the death of its illustrious founder and in cessation of payments since the end of June 2024. He is the actor and comedian Gad Elmaleh who was chosen by the courts to buy the business of the emblematic cabaret as announced by AFP which was able to consult the judgment of this Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Gad Elmaleh intends to do so “a place of comedy and humor, while keeping the soul of the place”even if he did not buy the brand “Chez Michou”. The place will therefore have to change its name but Catherine Catty-Jacquart, Michou’s niece, is not worried.

“Gad Elmaleh will continue to keep 80 rue des Martyrs alive, having fallen into the right hands as Michou would have liked. We would have been unfortunate if the place became something other than a cabaret. It will no longer be called Chez Michou, but Gad is going to make it a very beautiful place.
