Reese Witherspoon is proud to have been able to make it as a single mother.
The 48-year-old actress is mother to Ava, 25, and Deacon, 20, with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, as well as Tennessee, 12, with her ex-partner Jim Toth. The star opened up about how she found her voice after her first marriage ended in 2006 because she had no one else to rely on to make decisions for her.
During a panel discussion at her company Hello Sunshine’s Shine Away event in Los Angeles on Saturday, Reese emphasized that her company wants to promote “stories where women saved themselves.”
She added: “Because every woman in this room saved herself, [d’une] financial situation, from a bad relationship, you had to save yourself. There is a moment in all of our lives when we realize that no one comes to help us, that no one comes to make decisions for us. For me, it’s up to me to make this choice. I’ve had a lot of them. As a single mother in my late 20s, I had to make a lot of decisions for my two children and a lot of financial decisions too.”
