The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games
Angèle’s fans were champing at the bit. Unveiled on August 11th at the closing of the Paris Olympics, “Nightcall”, the Belgian singer’s collaboration with French DJ Kavinsky and the group Phoenix, is finally available for sale on iTunes and streaming platforms like Deezer and Spotify this Friday.
Released in 2010, “Nightcall” is a song written by Kavinsky, real name Vincent Belorgey, with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, famous half of the duo Daft Punk. On the original version, the voice that answers the DJ is Luísa Hanae Matsushita aka Lovefoxxx, the brilliant singer of the Brazilian indie group CSS.
A year later, this haunting mid-tempo was used by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn in the opening scene of Driver, his excellent film noir starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac. Winner of the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, it grossed $81.4 million at the box office, its director’s greatest success.
In 2013, Nightcall was given a second life thanks to the cover of the English group London Grammar which appears on its first album, “If you wait”. A bright folk version which inspired the performances of several candidates of “The Voice” on TF1 like Elliott in 2016 and Claire Gautier in 2017.
Let’s be honest: the new version with Angèle is almost a copy-paste of the original. But in the euphoria of the event, it generated a historic spike in searches on Shazam during the closing ceremony in front of millions of viewers. So much so that three days later, the singer of “Balance ton quoi” announced the release of her studio version which is already at the top of the singles sales this Friday on iTunes.
