(Ecofin Agency) – In accordance with its plan to increase its influence on the international energy market, Algeria is working to strengthen its infrastructural capabilities.
70% complete, the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) extraction complex currently under construction in the Rhoud El-Baguel area of interest in the locality of Ouargla located in eastern Algeria, is almost complete and is expected to enter service in the coming weeks.
According to Rachid Hachichi, the boss of Sonatrach who made the information official on Tuesday December 17, following a meeting with Tecnimont, the Italian company responsible for the engineering of the project, operationalization of the installation is expected for the first half of 2025.
Once launched, the infrastructure should allow Algeria to produce the equivalent of 1000 tonnes per day of LPG in addition to 300 tonnes of condensate. Data published in May 2024 by Statista suggests a decline in Algeria's LPG production since the peak of 25,400 barrels per day (around 3,500 tonnes per day) reached in 2014.
The prospect of the upcoming production of this volume of fuel would be particularly useful for the realization of the program of gradual conversion of the Algerian automobile fleet towards cleaner transport. Last year, more than a million vehicles were converted to LPG.
From this point of view, the installation should contribute to the pursuit of Algeria's energy transition ambitions. A few months ago, the Commission for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CEREFE) indicated that in the country, LPG played an important role in reducing the use of diesel and gasoline in 2022 compared to 2015.
