Senegal and Gambia affirm their desire to strengthen their economic cooperation

During the second session of the Senegalese-Gambia Economic Forum, the Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, expressed Thursday in Banjul the need to considerably intensify trade between Dakar and Banjul. According to an article in Sud Quotidien, these exchanges reached 117 billion CFA francs between 2000 and 2023, but the ambition is now to cross the 500 billion mark in the years to come.

Co-chairing the event with Muhammed Jallow, Vice President of The Gambia, Ousmane Sonko highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation, a relationship already firmly established over the years. He acknowledged progress, but insisted that considerable efforts still need to be made. “The 117 billion francs can be multiplied by ten. This is our goal. We must ensure that The Gambia is more useful to Senegal and vice versa, in all sectors,” he said.

The Prime Minister also spoke of the need to increase investments in key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, transport, as well as in tourism, hydrocarbons and industry.

For his part, Muhammed Jallow hailed this forum as a symbol of unity and a practical tool to achieve common economic development objectives, report our colleagues from Sud Quotidien.
