Michel Barnier, 73, was appointed Prime Minister this Thursday by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, this Thursday, September 5, at the end of interminable negotiations between the different political forces, galvanized on the left by early legislative elections at the beginning of July.

With this designation, Michel Barnier thus makes his return to the French political scene after three years of absence. In 2021, he suffered a defeat in the first round of the Republicans (LR) primaries to designate the right-wing candidate for the 2022 presidential election.

In Brussels, he was European Commissioner twice, responsible for Regional Policies and the Financial Framework (1999-2004), then responsible for the Internal Market and Services (2009-2014). Before being appointed Brexit negotiator in 2016.
