George RR Martin did not like the storyline of season 2 of House of the Dragon and made this known on his blog, in a since-deleted message. The author of Fire and Blood, from which the series is based, regrets the showrunner’s choice to remove the character of Maelor, youngest son of Aegon and Helaena Targaryen, reports BFM. In the series, the couple only has two children, Jaehaera and Jaehaerys.

When Queen Helaena is forced to choose one of her children to sacrifice, she chooses Jaehaerys, the HBO series tells us. But the book version is even crueler: the queen chooses Maelor, but the killers slaughter Jaehaerys before confessing to his brother that his mother had chosen him to die in her place.

A watered-down version

“When Ryan Condal (the showrunner) told me his idea years ago, I was opposed to it, for many reasons,” recalls George RR Martin, writer and executive producer of House of the Dragon. This change still weakens the series a little bit.” According to him, the book version was “darker”: “The dimension Sophie’s Choice [un film où l’héroïne doit sacrifier un de ses enfants pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale] was the strongest and darkest part of the scene. I hated that it wasn’t in the series(…) - 20minutes
