More and more snowbirds leave or think of leaving Florida due to the very high cost of living. The newspaper went to Florida to meet Quebecers and see their dismay.
Hollywood, Florida | “Currently it’s probably the best time for a Quebecer to buy,” said Richard Clavet who has invested millions of dollars in 35 years to build his business in Florida.
Richard’s Motel now has nine accommodation places, mainly in Hollywood and the surrounding area.
Its owner has learned over time that in crises, there are always opportunities to seize.
“The panic crisis that is currently happening in real estate, and mainly among Quebecers, it hurts me because it is in times like that it’s time to buy,” laments M .
Drop in reservations
He also notices a drop in the number of reservations in his motels.
“The exchange rate has a psychological effect on the world and demand is much lower because of that,” he says.
“Many customers are afraid of the new American administration for no valid reason […]it causes a final drop in the businesswe see it everywhere here and elsewhere, ”adds the businessman.
-But Richard Clavet is far from being discouraged because he saw others since the purchase of his first building in 1990.

Canadian inflation
Rather, he tends to get used to the financially suffocated Quebec seniors who decide to sell.
“It is terrible for retirees who undergo the effects of inflation [au Canada] which leads to their impoverishment due to the Canadian dollar […] They choose to liquidate their property and at the same time their dream, it is sad. ”
Besides, when the time comes to talk about the cost of living in the United States and the exchange rate, Mr. Clavet has a well-stopped opinion on the issue.
“In general, you’re going to have more for your money with your US $ 69 in the United States than your $ 100 in Quebec,” he concludes.
