Elon Musk likes to repeat it: traditional media is dying and his social network X is now the best source of information in the world. Logically, it is therefore on X that the American multi-billionaire finds out about European news. One example among others: until 2023, Germany, where a large Tesla factory is located, was not a major center of interest for Elon Musk – in ten years, he had only devoted country only a handful of tweets and, in 2020, the return of a “great stay in Germany”he still welcomed the “support of the German government and people” to his projects.
But on September 29, 2023, the tone changed radically: the multi-billionaire engaged in a skirmish, on the social network that he bought the previous year, with the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The subject? Boats chartered by German associations to rescue migrants in the Mediterranean, a problem that Elon Musk seems to have just discovered, via a message, which he quotes, from the “RadioGenoa” account.
Created by an Italian neofascist activist, this account followed by 1.2 million people daily broadcasts racist messages and images of European news stories out of any context. In 2024, Mr. Musk has publicly responded to him 25 times.
