As of this year, nearly 2.1 million households will have to comply with a new obligation regarding electricity. Indeed, a major change is occurring in the management of off-peak hours. Although this key moment allows you to optimize your consumption and reduce your bill, this change risks having unexpected consequences. We explain everything to you!
To save on the electricity bill
To help households reduce their electricity bill, suppliers have introduced the off-peak and off-peak hours system. The objective? Encourage households to adapt their consumption according to energy demand.
Peak hours are those where electricity demand is highusually during the day. During these times, the price is more expensive.
Off-peak hours, on the other hand, are at night or early in the morning, when demand is lower. Electricity is cheaper there, because production is higher than consumption. It is during this period that households must program energy-intensive appliances such as the water heater or the washing machine.

However, a change will soon take place regarding these pricing methods. And no, it is not households that already use this system that will have to comply with the new measure.
What’s changing this year
The Energy Regulatory Commission will gradually remove the base option. This option, which fixes the price of electricity all day long, will gradually disappear. In fact, it will generalize the system of off-peak and peak hours. This year, this measure concerns around 2.1 million households.
The reform will take place in stages and will ultimately affect all electricity consumers. The first meeting will be February 1, 2025 which concerns households with meters from 9 kVA to 15 kVA. The transformation will take place automatically, without electricity consumers having to do anything.
-The next change will take place a year later. In February 2026, households with meters from 18 kVA to 36 kVA will no longer be able to choose the base option. A transition which will also be done automatically.
But what about homes that use less electricity? The CRE plans tests for 3 kVA and 6 kVA meters. The objective is to add one or two hours per day with a higher price to encourage more reasoned consumption.

Impacts on the electricity bill
The goal is very clear! The reform makes it possible to better distribute electricity consumption to reduce peaks in demand. However, this decision could have significant consequences. Indeed, households that use a lot of electricity during peak hours risk seeing their bill increase.
So, to avoid paying a lot, it’s better to stay vigilant! You must change your habits regarding your electricity consumption.
Furthermore, the end of the base option is not the only development that electricity consumers will have to face. The CRE also plans to move certain off-peak hours during the day. For what ? This decision aims to adapt to the rise of solar energy, the production of which reaches higher levels, particularly in the afternoon.
The objective is to promote the use of renewable energies. By applying reduced rates during periods of high solar productionCRE hopes to encourage the adoption of this energy source. This approach will also help to minimize carbon emissions and ensure more sustainable electricity management.
