One of the hot topics currently in Montreal during this incredible streak is obviously Jakub Dobes’ outfit since the start of his career in the National Hockey League.
The 23-year-old Czech goaltender has impressed since he was called up to the NHL by the CH, while he won his first four games, abroad against excellent teams.
In short, the 6-foot-4 goalkeeper has clearly already made a name for himself, and the fans are thinking big in him, while almost all of them are overexcited by his performances.
In all of this, well, we practically forgot that basically, Dobes is not quite considered to be THE goalie of the future for the Montreal Canadiens.
This title belongs to Jacob Fowler, even if he still plays in the NCAA.
Indeed, the 20-year-old netminder has proven to us for two seasons that he is destined for a future in the NHL, and this has only been amplified in the last few weeks.
Moreover, last night, Fowler already recorded his 5th shutout of the season, while Boston College won 3-0 against Providence College.
What’s even more impressive about all of this is that Fowler now has five shutouts in just 19 games this season.
So Fowler records a shutout in about every four games, which is simply mind-blowing.
The 6-foot, 2-inch CH prospect was particularly solid last night, as he was able to turn aside 24 shots, while maintaining his team’s one-goal lead with key saves like this one against Alexander Bales.
With his five shutouts this season, Fowler has already surpassed his mark of three shutouts in 39 games last season, which demonstrates how much the CH prospect is improving and developing very well in the NCAA.
-In 19 games this season, in addition to his five shutouts, Fowler maintains a goals against average per game of 1.74 and a save percentage of .932.
Those are great stats for the Boston College stalwart, and if he continues like this, there will be no doubt that the 20-year-old guard will have nothing left to learn in the NCAA and will therefore be able to make the jump to the pros next season.
I would really be surprised to see the CH return Fowler to Boston College for a third season, while he would develop much more if he joined the Laval Rocket in the American League.
In short, the Habs’ future in net is in very good hands with Dobes and Fowler, and their recent performances are forcing Samuel Montembeault to get up and play his best hockey.
Next season will be really interesting to follow for the two young goaltenders, as Dobes will want to continue to prove that he belongs in the NHL, while Fowler will want to show that he is ready to play in the pros.
In Burst
– The Rocket will be in action again this evening after obtaining a nice 3-2 victory last night. We will have to monitor whether Joshua Roy will be able to play given that he left last night’s game.
– Mikko Rantanen will not be traded despite contract extension negotiations being at an impasse. [Responsible Gambler]
– Interesting.
– Good point.
