This is an idea that should displease some partygoers or fans of long aperitifs at the bistro. A public petition open for signatures since Friday calls for cafes to close at 10 p.m. “The objective is to reduce noise, incivility, fights, drug trafficking,” explains the petitioner in the text available on the website petitions.lu.
According to her, “it is not up to local residents to suffer, to be sick or depressed” when cafes are “a source of noise, conflicts and drug trafficking”, she explains. “Respect and the laws must apply.” In the absence of an early closure which should cause some cash flow problems for quite a few establishments, the petitioner would agree to settle for “total isolation of cafes”. Not sure that this would be enough, however, to reduce drug trafficking, as the petitioner claims.
The text is open for signatures until February 27. In all, thirteen new petitions were published this Friday, and those crossing the 4,500 initials mark will be the subject of a public debate with the ministers and deputies concerned by their theme. In addition to a petition for “the evolution of visitation and accommodation rights for fathers of young children”, a modification of taxation for the year of divorce is requested to avoid joint declaration after separation.
One petition calls for sanctions against Israel for its policy in Palestine, another for an increase in the conditions for granting an orphan’s pension. Cardiac surgery elsewhere than in the center of the country or an increase in the number of educators in daycare structures for primary school children are also called for, among others. One petitioner wants teachers to be deprived of mobile phones during lessons, “in order to avoid distractions and reinforce their role as role models”.
