However, not so long ago, the Mediterranean neighbor was the preferred location for exports of tricolor gold grains. Arthur Portier, analyst at Argus Media France (formerly Agritel), recalls a time when “Algerian millers crushed more French wheat than their counterparts in France”. More recently, in 2017, he estimates that 53% of France's wheat volumes, sold outside the European Union, went to Algeria. This rate increased to 18% during the years 2023 and 2024.
-And for the campaign which began with the 2024 harvest? Flat encephalogram. “There are no exports to Algeria at the moment”notes Benoît Piétrement, president of the council specializing in large crops at FranceAgriMer.
